This is very important to discuss. We need to know why this is happening and how to improve this issue
Wonderful piece to hear today as I ponder whether a move back to the West Coast would be timely. I love SF and the Castro but also did not note when I lived there in ’93 the lack of color in the city as a whole. It would be great that this would be changing, so perhaps it’s time to add to the tipping point and come back? Thanks for posting this!
Hmmm another brother seem to be whitewashed in the white man’s world!
In the 1st place the so called all accepting gay community doesn’t exist. There is no community gated or otherwise where ONLY gays live or exist. Listen to watch you are saying! You think because Castro has a few gay bars and venue; Some gay and lesbians have moved into that area it some how is a gay community or suburb!
I don’t get it. Why would a gay man that accepts that he is gay and not on the down low; feel the need to SEGREGATE himself from mainstream society where he now lives, family and friends exist and he earns a living? He wants to select a HOOD based on the assumption he can chat up other men in the hood or feel safer in numbers when unless they are fens he still cant tell who’s gay and who’s not!
The other down side….Are you as a black gay male only going to follow white gay lead cause and remain silent on black and NON-Gay related issues? You are not going to segregate yourself from LIFE issues by moving into a so called gay hood and why would you want to as a Black Man! I don’t see many white gays moving into so called Black gay Communities are going to black venues.
It’s a MYTH…there is no such thing as a gay community…lol…you been left out of the Castro one just like all the other hoods. YOU seek white hoods and move into them…then they move out!
I remember when this topic was a hot issue and it has seem to lost its steam. I am a gay black man who has lived in San Francisco for almost 7 years and I am so ashamed at the lack of diversity the city has, especially when it comes to African American men.
I try not to hang out in the Castro unless I really have to and I am with friends who out vote me. I prefer the scene in SOMA, it it more diverse and friendly with none of that “I am better than you” mentality you see in the Castro. I was born and raised in a small town in Tennessee so I was use to being called racist slurs. I have lived in Ft Lauderdale and Chicago and NEVER experienced racism until I moved to San Francisco. I have been called the N word so many times and all in the Castro by other gay men.
I think it is sad that a community that is fighting for its own equality, we have this issue or hidden racism and tolerance. The Castro needs to wake up and really be the role model for the rest of the LGBT community on this issue as it does for LGBT right. I just do not and never have felt a part of the community here.
