Black gay rapper, artist and HIV educator, Kevin “Kaoz” Moore, talks about what Black Gay Pride means to him and why we need Black Pride. This brother is a true inspiration and always feels me with such pride and joy, I just want to hug him! This video is from 2009, but is just as relevant today as it was then and we shouldn’t have to wait for Black Pride events to think about what it all really means. Many of us black gay men forget that it can’t be all about partying and sex. Besides, if it wasn’t for some of the people who are now shunned by some black gay men(eg effeminate men, drag queens etc), there would be no safe gay clubs as we know them today, there would be no Pride or Black Gay Pride, there would be no Black HIV/AIDS service organizations. It took brave souls to get us where we are today and thankfully, there are people like Kaoz and the many other tireless soldiers, who continue to fight and make us proud each and every day.

So next time you find yourself about to put down your fellow black gay men for being out, or for being feminine, or for being a drag queen, or for not being on the DL or thugged-out enough – think about what our lives would be like today without brave black gay men and lesbians. We don’t all have to be the same, but we can learn to respect and appreciate one another, because without love and respect, there is very little strength. Once again kudos to Kevin “Kaoz” Moore and our other black gay soldiers – we love you!
